Advice for Junior SEOs

I’ve worked in agency and inhouse roles for almost 20 years.

Its been mostly in SEO but also covered all other facets of digital marketing.

The experience has me richer for the better and some days I can’t believe how long I’ve been in the field and what incredible work I’ve been a part of.

So this is me, sharing some wisdom for the up and coming digital marketing rockstar ninja gurus out there, looking for a spot in the world.

Here’s some tips to help you out as a Junior SEO:

  1. Manage expectations from the start
    1. whether its clients or organisational stakeholders, you have to get everyone on the same page when it comes to what to expect from SEO (the work done, the results to expect)
  2. Assume everyone is clueless about SEO
    1. Keep it simple when explaining concepts and use analogies to aid in understanding. Jargon only confuses people further
  3. Give clear instructions to developers
    1. Be as specific as possible when asking for things to be done. Developers should be able to read a task and clearly understand what is to be done. It often helps to explain why this has to be done too.
  4. Don’t just show. Tell
    1. Reports with keywords, rankings and graphs are meaningless without analysis. Explain what people are seeing and help them understand it better, even if it’s not good news.
  5. Overcommunicate
    1. No one cares more about the impact of SEO than you. Trust me.  Unless you speak up and do so regularly, no one else is going to worry about SEO.

For what it’s worth, I’m still learning and growing. Every new client and project brings forth a new set of challenges and some days, just when you think you’ve seen or heard it all, out comes a curveball that takes you by surprise.

Just remember that a job is a means to an end. It does not define your existence. If you’re not learning and earning, start looking for something that fixes that.

You’re young and still new in your career. You’ve got time to make a change for the better.

All the best kid!
